Fall Garden Tips For Surprise, Arizona
Now that fall is coming around the temperatures will start to dip and we can get ready for the next round of gardening and some prep for next year for the perennials!
These fall garden tips are pretty specific to Surprise, Arizona and other desert locations so keep that in mind when using these tips for your garden at home.
Pruning
Pruning is a big part of gardening in Surprise and other areas where plants, trees, and shrubs grow year round.
September is time to trim back summer blooming perennials by about 1/3. Your perennial herbs will come back stronger if you trim back the summer damaged portions.
This is NOT the time to prune fruit trees.
If you have annuals in your garden that bloomed in spring and summer it’s time to clear them out.
You can replace them with fall favorites or leave the area bare until spring rolls around again. In any case, this is the time, as the weather cools off, to remove those dwindling and dying plants from the garden.
If the temperatures are staying below 100 degrees F it is safe to start pruning roses lightly by trimming off the dead blooms and stems, etc.
Planting
If you are ready to start planning and preparing for your spring garden this is the time to add spring blooming perennials to the garden. They’ll be fine in the cooler months so you can plant them now!
Another thing you’ll want to start planting is seed potatoes! If you do vegetable gardening potatoes can go into the ground now or in in October.

Fertilizer and Compost
Another very important aspect of fall gardening is fertilizer and compost. This is one of those key fall garden tips if you want to have a successful winter and spring garden.
The fall is a great time to add fertilizer and compost to your herb and vegetable beds. It will help keep the soil productive and replenish nutrients that were depleted throughout the spring and summer.
Now is also the time to start fertilizing citrus trees so that they have the nutrients they need to produce excellent fruit.
September and October are the time to begin fertilizing roses again as well. They shouldn’t be fertilized during the summer months.
Watering
As every garden lover knows, fall garden tips should also include notes about watering! Water needs change in the fall and winter as the temperatures begin too cool. This is true not just of herbs and veggies but also of fruit trees and perennials!
Before and after fertilizing citrus trees you should water them deeply. They need less frequent waterings in the fall than they need in the summer but they should still be good deep waterings.
Twice a month waterings for fruit tress is perfect once the temperatures are below 100 degrees F.
Roses and other flowering perennials will need to be watered frequently still. Every few days is great and they should always have a good long drink before and after fertilization!
If you plant spring flowering perennials make sure you are also adding them to your watering list as they’ll need help getting enough water until their roots take hold.
